Kmart builds long term partnerships with its suppliers

In March 2015, Kmart Australia hosted its first Irresistible Supplier Conference and Partnership Event in Melbourne, Victoria. More than 50 of Kmart’s key suppliers from China, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Cambodia and Malaysia attended the three-day conference, which aimed to build a shared understanding and commitment on topics important to Kmart and our suppliers’ long term growth and success.

The suppliers were joined at the event by Kmart’s senior management team, with sessions organised to consider suppliers’ views on topics including:

  • Kmart’s long-term growth strategy;
  • Improvements in communication between Kmart and suppliers;
  • Further strengthening of ethical sourcing and quality systems; and
  • Opportunities to drive greater efficiency and achieve cost savings for Kmart and suppliers.

As part of the conference, the suppliers also spent time in one of Kmart’s new concept stores in Southland and Kmart’s Victorian distribution centre in Truganina, to build a deeper understanding of Kmart’s operations and supply chain and how it contributes to the overall success of business. A range of dinners and functions across the three days offered a further opportunity for informal discussion.

Kmart and its suppliers came away from the conference with a greater appreciation of each other’s strategic drivers and challenges. As part of Kmart’s 2020 sustainability strategy, a range of initiatives are planned to further enhance supplier relationships and performance, including regular supplier forums and targeted capacity building to strengthen ethical sourcing and quality systems.
