Curragh undertakes mobile LED lighting project
Our Curragh mine uses mobile lighting for operating at night. Mobile lighting units at Curragh were expensive to run, had high emissions and were difficult to maintain, so Curragh turned to new technology. In 2014, Curragh commenced investigations into new lighting technology which would improve unit availability, reduce operating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The previous 28 metal halide lighting units were replaced with 21 LED units. The replacement units reduce fuel usage by approximately 700,000 litres per year. This creates an annual cost saving of approximately $760,000 and an annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of nearly 2,000 tonnes CO2e.
